First Real Cold...

The Tuesday before Christmas Kylie started showing symptoms of a cold. It seemed to get a little worse adding chest congestion and a cough. We did all the home remedies that everyone says to do, elevate her bed, use a humidifier, suction her nose, use saline drops, but it still wasn't getting any better. So we called the doctor on Friday, since it had already been a week and a half of not getting better. Turns out her cold turned into Bronchiolitis. Didn't know there was a difference between Bonchitis and Bronchiolitis, but there is. Apparently, it is the inflamation of the small tubes in the lungs as opposed to the big bronchioles outside the lungs. It made it harder for her to breathe, her chest was wheezing as her lungs were working much harder than they should have to. It's pretty serious in infants because their bronchioles are so tiny.

So the doctor sent us home with a nebulizer and we gave her some treatments every 4 hours. I think it was the same stuff they give for kids with asthma. It seemed to help. We went back on Monday for a check up and her lungs were not as tight. She still has some congestion and a cough, but isn't contagious or anything. These things just take awhile to clear out I guess. We're still giving her treatments as needed and before bedtime to help her breathe better at night. Yes we're still having sleepless nights. She wakes up not able to breathe through her nose and gets scared. She learned how to breathe through her mouth, but forgets to sometimes when she sleeps.

Last night, we finally left her in her room. She had to cry several times and we went in to soothe her a few times, but she was able to breathe! The last few nights she couldn't really breathe so we would hold her upright to help her fall asleep and we let her sleep with us a little elevated. We are definitely looking forward to her sleeping through the night again.. this no/little sleep thing for Mommy has been going on for almost 3 weeks now!

It is not fun having a sick baby. You keep wishing that you could make it all better, but you can't because with some things there is nothing you can do. It was so sad watching her on the monitor not able to sleep because she couldn't breathe. We are so glad that we have our pediatrician who is on top of things and really helped us take care of Kylie.

On a side note, we combined her 6 month checkup on Monday since her appt was scheduled for next Monday. She got her 6 month shots, 3 shots and one oral. Much better than the previous 6 or 7 vaccines. She is still in the 45th percentiles for height and weight. She has stayed in the average range this whole time. She is definitely not growing as quickly as her parents. We were already 18 to 20 pounds at this point and she is still 15 and a half pounds. Oh well, she's growing just fine and developmentally is right on track!
